May, We Race! - Virtual Half Marathon Bracket Race - Sunday May 17th

Here are some rules....

You can run 13.11 miles anytime on Sunday May 17th.  The course can be of any design you like.

Uphill?  Sure!  Downhill?  Sure!  52.74625 laps of a 400 meter track?  Go for it, but you're nuts!  You can even run it on a treadmill if you like, but hopefully you'll be able to get outside instead.

The cost to enter this highly professional and elegantly produced event is exactly $0.00.  There is no cap on the size of the entry field.  Please feel free to share the challenge with your friends, family, frenemies, dog, cat, goldfish or any other entity that might be interested in having a race on their calendar that won't get cancelled.

The event will be a bracket race.  Never heard of one?  Everyone has an equal chance to win!  To "register" for the race follow this link to add your Name and Predicted Finish time.  You do not need to use your real name.  After you run 13.11 miles or more on Sunday May 17th, just go back to the spreadsheet and add your Actual Time.  A link to your activity uploaded to Strava, Garmin, etc. would also be nice to have and will be required for winning any of the 3 prizes available.  Entrants have until 11:59:59pm on Sunday May 17th to update the spreadsheet with their Actual Time and/or link.

The ultimate goal is to be the closest to your predicted time without going faster than your prediction.

If you choose to randomly stop 0.01 miles from the finish and wait for the clock to change or game the system in any discernible way a penalty will be assessed in a capricious and heavy handed manner that guarantees failure.

The first runner to reach the finish line WITHOUT going faster than their predicted finish time will be declared the winner.  All runners that finish slower than their predicted finish will be ranked, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. based on how much slower than the predicted time they were when they crossed the virtual finish line.

Those that are bad at estimating their times and cross the finish line faster than their predicted times, (pronounced: LOSERS) will be ranked at the back of the pack.  The loser who has gone too fast, but has come closest amongst all of the losers to their predicted time will be declared the 1st of the worst.  The next closest person will be the 2nd of the worst, etc.  The person who beats their predicted finish time by the biggest margin will be the worst of the worst.

There will be a prize for the 1st place winner.

There will be a much less desirable prize for the 1st place loser.

There will be a least desirable prize of all for the worst of the worst.

Rules Update...Bike option also available...

The event is now also open to folks that would like to participate with an alternate mode of transportation.  If running 13.11 miles is not for you, then participants are welcome to bike 26.22 miles instead.  At the end of the day, none of us are racing each other we are really racing our predicted times.  The prizes will be distributed across all participants.
